I Met My Dopplegänger In Fiction

Dopplegänger: a ghostly counterpart of a living person; a double; alter ego. ~Merriam Webster Dictionary

Dopple-what? Da-pul-gang-er. I met mine this past week in a book called Life From Scratch by Melissa Ford. Mifsit Mom added this book to my kindle a few months ago, because she thought I would enjoy it as a light read. I have been so busy with work that reading has been the last thing on my mind. Until this weekend. And now I have a Dopplegänger.

Maybe you’ve experienced this at some point. You meet someone, you have so much in common it’s almost impossible, and then you’re convinced you were separated at birth. Or that your souls are somehow connected and you were meant to find each other. I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I found that person in a book. The main character is a divorcee (so is yours truly), who decides to “find herself” (what late 20-something-year-old woman hasn’t done this at one point?), and begins a blog (hers is food, mine is photography…small detail).

But what’s more amazing is the emotional similarities I have to this character. I feel like I’m reading a diary about myself that someone else has written! Weird. VERY weird. Am I crazy dear readers? Have you ever experienced this before with a book?

Here are some of my favorite quotes from Life From Scratch so far…

Other unphraseable facts: The shape of my hands, the way I sleep on my side, how I am more likely to take the last brownie than offer it to you, how deeply I love, because that seems like the most important point of all for a potential suitor to know: how deeply I love.

Blogging can seem a little self-indulgent; foisting your free therapy on everyone else in the world. But some of us can’t afford a vacation from life and therapy, so free isn’t half bad. Plus, the night I received my first comment was like finding life on Mars.

Hell hath no fury like a woman once ignored, who is now receiving attention several years to late.

Now Misfit Mom did mention that I may not like the ending…I’ll keep you updated on that front.

I haven’t yet met my dopplegänger. If I ever do, it will probably be the same way. In fiction.

I really like that second photo. Nicely done. 🙂
